Deep Tech in Berlin
Conversations with founders, researchers, and engineers in one of the world’s leading deep tech hubs reinforced a simple belief: great companies can be built anywhere.
We have always believed that where founders sleep at night has little to do with how great their companies can become. World-class companies can be built anywhere.
Eva and I were in Berlin last week, and the trip reinforced that belief.
One highlight was spending time with two founders from the Two Small Fish Ventures portfolio: Fabian Harmik Stelzer, CEO of glif, and Nasim Rahaman, co-founder of Tiptree Systems. Both are building ambitious companies at the frontier of technology, and our conversations left us even more excited about what lies ahead. The discussion with Fabian was so engaging that we completely forgot to take a photo together.
We also hosted a School of Fish dinner with a group of researchers, engineers, and founders. Over good food and drinks—including one of the best schnitzels I’ve ever had—the conversation ranged from AI to neuromorphic computing and other areas pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
Berlin reminded us why it is one of the world’s great deep tech hubs. The city brings together exceptional founders, researchers, engineers, world-class universities, and leading research labs, creating an environment where curiosity, technical excellence, and ambition reinforce one another. It is the kind of ecosystem where breakthrough ideas can move from the lab to the marketplace.
As we continue investing globally, we are constantly reminded that breakthrough companies emerge from many different places. Geography can influence a founder’s path, but it is talent, determination, and vision that drive outcomes. We feel fortunate to meet and support remarkable founders around the world who are building the future.
More and more, those founders are reaching out to us as well. That’s a privilege we don’t take for granted.
